Why Do Diabetics Hate It So

Type 2 Diabetes Diet vicious circle. You feel rotten. You want comfort food (mostly sugar and processed flour – cake, candy, pie, ice cream, pizza). Quick sugar rush. Feel good for an hour. Crash and burn. The cycle repeats. How can a diabetic break the cycle?

Problem #1: Medical professionals are not in agreement as to what causes diabetes.

As a type II diabetic, I basically know what I should be eating and what I should be avoiding or eliminating from my diet. A type 2 diabetes diet is not rocket science. Eat real food. Get adequate protein. Avoid processed wheat, sugar, and high fructose corn syrup (HFCS). Simple.

And exercise. Couch potatoes are at even higher risk.

Life has told you to eat your vegetables. I don’t really hate vegetables, but I don’t seek them out at the buffet table either. To me, the only vegetable I want to consume is V8 Juice. If I could, I would have a V8 tree out back and harvest 2 or 3 cans a day.

Real reasons diabetics hate dietary restrictions:

1. Force. We’re adults, dammit. We should be able to do and eat what we want.

2. Even if I didn’t have diabetes, I don’t want to diet. Each new fad and food pyramid and hormone injection seems sillier than the previous ones. If diets worked, the diet book section at Barnes and Noble would have 1 volume.

3. People often consume things that are not good for them. Beer. Bourbon. Cigarettes. How bad can a slice and a Coke be?

4. The foods we crave and which we now have to avoid are the ones that brought on the disease in the first place.

5. Chicken or the egg. If I didn’t crave Edy’s Girl Scout Thin Mint Cookie ice cream, and didn’t develop diabetes, I could eat all of it that I want. Now that I want it, I can’t have it.

6. Jonesing for sugar. If they invent pizza with an apple pie topping, I’m in. For most of my life, sugar was a major food group.

7. Conflicting medical information. Coffee is not okay, or maybe it is if you drink it black. Fruit is okay one day and too high in sugar the next. Avoid all sugar, or have small portions of anything you want. Eat less animal fat, but get your protein.

Doctors – get the answers straight before you hit the Today show. If you don’t have an answer, how can we.

In actuality, many type II diabetics can make it on a diet doctors recommend for everyone, especially our obese Americans on the SAD (Standard American Diet) diet.

-low fat
-low sugar
-low salt
-plenty of fruits and vegetables
-whole grains, beans, potatoes

You have to experiment for yourself. An inexpensive blood testing meter will let you know if it’s time to have a glass of water and a handful of almonds to get that blood sugar down. Work with your doctor to develop a plan for diet and medication.

Doctors may be heavily influenced by the pharmaceutical companies, but they are even more dependent on trust from their patients. I personally believe that a type 2 diabetes diet of lean meat, fish, whole foods, fruits, and vegetables can not only keep diabetes in check while also reducing obesity and lowering the risk of heart disease, strokes, and dementia.

I am sure you are sick and tired of these gimmicks.

Tips for Better Blood Sugar Control

For those newly diagnosed with diabetes one of the hardest parts of managing their disease is the undertaking of a diet for a diabetic. But since this is also probably the most important part of managing this condition re-learning to eat the right types of foods is paramount.

There is a lot of dietary information available for the diabetic in the form of books and online resources. When you throw in the information given by their health care provider and nutritionist it can be a little overwhelming and confusing when first starting out with a diabetic diet. Fortunately with a little time those with diabetes learn how to manage their disease through the foods they eat.

With that in mind here are 4 tips that if you keep them at the forefront of your diabetic meal planning will keep you on the right track to fighting the complications that diabetes causes.

1. Watch the snacks – This can be one of the more difficult things that any diabetic has to undertake. In our society the grocery store shelves and checkout lines are loaded with snacks and drinks that are the bain of the diabetic. These foods are loaded with refined sugars which spike blood sugar levels the instant you eat them. You will have to break the sugary snack habit and instead eat more healthy snacks such as unsalted mixed nuts and fresh fruits and vegetables.

2. Watch for foods that are highly processed and made with white flour – What you need to be eating are whole grain foods that are high in fiber and complex carbohydrates. The reasons for this are simple; complex carbohydrates from high fiber foods are broken down slowly and released into the bloods stream at a manageable rate. This keeps blood sugar levels steady without the huge spikes caused by refined foods.

3. Eat more raw foods including fruits and vegetables – Foods in their rawest and freshest form are the healthiest foods and are an important part of a diet for a diabetic. They are high in fiber, protein, vitamins and minerals, and complex carbohydrates all of which are a key part of blood sugar management.

4. Stay hydrated – That’s right you need to drink plenty of water. While it contains little in the way of nutrients it is probably the most important nutrient you can consume. It keeps all your bodily systems running smoothly and helps removes wastes and toxins from the blood stream.

The diet for a diabetic is an evolving undertaking as you learn more about your condition and how to manage its effects. If you keep these four tips in mind you will find that you will soon find the right combination of foods and lifestyle choices that keep you healthy and whole.

Most Frequently Prescribed Diabetes Medications

When it comes to diabetes they are different types of medication currently available. If you are diagonalized with type II diabetes, you are given medication instead of insulin. And sometimes a combination of drugs are used. They use of these drugs is to help the body produce more insulin and eliminate glucose.

One of the most popular drugs used to treat diabetes is Sulfonylureas and they are different types available in the market today. Some of it being Glucotrol. This drug works in a way that it helps the body increase insulin. Although the drugs work well in lowering glucose a person may be at risk in developing hypoglycemia. Which is caused by the blood sugar level being too slow. So to this effect this drug is usually given with another drug. A popular drug used with Glucotrol is Glucophage, which helps the liver by reducing the amount of glucose. Since this combination of drugs is effective in maintaining a healthy blood glucose level, it is usually given to type 2 diabetes.

One other drug that is proving to work well with Glucophage is Prandin. This drug helps in lowering your blood glucose levels. But just like Glucophage Prandin can also cause hypoglycemia since it increases the amount of insulin in the body. So a person with diabetes should always follow what the physician has told them to do like only choosing the right medication and never over dosing. It is also important to note that Prandin must not be used when nursing children or while a woman is pregnant.

Another drug we may look at which is similar to Prandin is Starlix. One major advantage of Starlix is that it can be used with those people with kidney problems and people with type II diabetes.

Medications are now being developed to help decrease the absorption of carbohydrates in the intestines. One of the best performers is Precose which did remarkably well. But when coming to sulfonlureas this medication did not do well. Sulfonlureas is considered one of the best medications to treat diabetes. But cannot be used if you are allergic to sulfur.

Symlin and Byetta are new medications that concentrate in controlling the glycemic index. But much more testing has to be done with this drug to be considered in traditional therapies.

Type II diabetes people should not be frightened by the diagnosis of this condition. Because there are different types of medications that can keep this disease today. For this medications to work, it is important for patients to be complaint. To help you maintain a healthy blood glucose level one should not take increased dosage, lower dosage or a different combination of medication. and make sure that you monitor your blood glucose level.

To control it yourself, you should make sure you work along with your physician and report your results when monitoring your blood glucose level. Make sure you do everything you physician tells you to keep this condition at bay.

Author: Lindelwa Laz

By the way, upon first being diagnosed with diabetes, many patients ask can a good diet keep diabetes at bay. Most doctors will agree that a good diet, low in carbohydrates and sugars can help a person with diabetes avoid many of the complications that often accompany the disease. While a good diet can not necessarily cure the illness, a good diet can keep diabetes at bay.

So, can a good diet keep diabetes at bay. The answer is yes. While it cannot cure a patient of diabetes, a good diet low in foods that have high ratings in the Glycemic Index and high in proteins can help an individual with this condition live a longer, healthier life.
